I keep everything. While cleaning out an old file cabinet a while back, I found notes I had taken at a mastermind session I attended over fifteen years ago. What I found in those notes was pure gold, but gold that I had forgotten that I had.
What I found was a true secret to lifelong success. It’s neglected today as being too simple, and geez, it has no app to use. But, like many things I’ve discovered during my life’s journey of continuous learning, many, if not most, of the greatest disciplines ever discovered are extraordinarily simple. So, the successful men and women in history keep these secrets, well, secret. This one is among the simplest yet most powerful success techniques I’ve ever discovered and applied.
Did I mention that it’s incredibly easy?
It’s called Exponential Doubling. It works like this. If you take $2 and double it 10 times, it amounts to $ 2,048.00. But get this. Take that same $2, doubled 30 times, and you have $ 1 billion. Crazy, right?
I’ve written about this before, but it’s certainly worth repeating. Let’s now apply the concept of Exponential Doubling to personal and professional growth and development. This is where some real magic happens. And the application is deceptively simple.
What if you did something to improve yourself and your thinking every day, and what if our daily goal was only 1/10th of 1%? That’s it. That’s all I ask. Just improve your knowledge or skills by a simple one-tenth of one percent. With Exponential Doubling growth, your skills and expertise would increase by nearly 36% in one year. But if you compound that for 5 years, your growth in skills and knowledge exceeds 1000 percent.
Holy cow! You work the math, that’s a 1000% advance in skills and expertise, just by focusing on a 1/10th of 1% daily growth in how you think and what you learn. So, do you think you could do that? Maybe I should ask, are you disciplined enough to do that? It doesn’t sound like much to ask. Doing an activity or taking action to move your abilities and your mindset forward every day takes some assertive discipline and focus.
If you think about it, and you will have to think about it, your daily self-improvement actions might take on several different looks. I’ve heard of clients just reading an extra chapter in a book, walking another block, reading their goals two times instead of once per day, making one more sales call, making one more phone call, writing one more key email, or listening to an informative podcast on the way home instead of just the radio. Sometimes, I remind myself to just say “Thank you” to every waiter or server who helps me at a restaurant. Or, for people I meet at the doctor’s office or the checkout line at the grocery store. Thank you is an amazing phrase, and it does count toward your 1/10 of 1% improvement for the day.
The trick is you must do something every day.
You must be disciplined. Remember, discipline is “Doing what you need to do, when you need to do it, whether you want to do it or not.” 1/10th of 1%, it’s that easy, but you must plan it and commit to making this concept work. Just think about what the results could be for you.
The potential effects could be kind of scary if believing in yourself is a foreign concept. But the real question is: what if this concept actually works the way I know it does? Can you walk away from an idea so simple that it could change your life in a very short period of time?
This entire idea offers a gold mine of possibilities. And all it requires is sometimes less than a couple of seconds, and the discipline to do it every day.
Look, just do it. It could be the small step you commit to and take that changes the course of your life. Exponential Doubling works. I challenge you to find your 1/10th of 1% a day. Let me know what happens. It will be fun, and really, it’s not too much to ask for an improved quality of life, is it?
